“UK banking watchdog defends anti-money laundering oversight” – Financial Times

On 18 January 2018, a new body within the Financial Conduct Authority, the Office for Professional Body Anti-Money Laundering Supervision (“OPBAS”) came into force. OPBAS aims to bring a coherent approach to anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing supervision in the UK so as to ensure consistency and quality of standards.

Jonathan Fisher QC was recently interviewed by the Financial Time and commented on the concerns raised by the UK Law Society. Jonathan said:

“The Law Society is right; this is an additional body that’s not necessary … The professional bodies will have to resist the temptation to be trigger happy in order to satisfy this new body.”
