Tax Evasion in The Times

Jonathan Fisher QC is quoted in The Times today (12 August 2013) on the HMRC crackdown on tax evasion, which has seen criminal prosecutions more than double in the last twelve months. Jonathan noted that the CPS would have to bear the cost of prosecutions, and so criticism that the HMRC was targeting 'low-lying fruit' - middle-class professional and tradespeople rather than serious criminals - was perhaps justified. Such cases were easier to resolve than complex corporate or offshore tax evasion
