SFO Incorporation into the NCA

The Conservative manifesto, published on 18 May 2017, proposes to incorporate the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) into the National Crime Agency (NCA). The proposal would spell the end of a standalone specialist investigation and prosecution body, targeting major bribery and fraud in the UK.

In The Times Briefing today, Jonathan Fisher QC commented: "This sends out the wrong message about the UK's resolve to tackle serious fraud and corruption. Instead of dismantling the prosecuting authority which has statutory responsibility for this task, the Government should be increasing the SFO's budget and expanding its enforcement remit. This manifesto commitment is counterintuitive."
