Jonathan Fisher QC quoted in Washington Post on UWOs

On 14th December 2018 the Washington Post published an extensive article under the headline “To combat dirty money, Britain asks: How did you pay for that mansion?” on the use of unexplained wealth orders in the UK in relation to the recent case of Ms Hajiyeva. When asked about the implications of the new provision, Jonathan Fisher QC commented: “It is quite a dramatic move to put a burden on somebody to explain the legitimacy of their income, versus the reverse burden, which would normally be on the state to show income or property had been unlawfully obtained.”
