On 9 August 2021 the UK government, coordinating with the EU and US, announced a package of sanctions on the Belarussian regime.
The sanctions contain measures that affect aviation, financial products, insurance and the trade of certain goods. Together with other specialists in this area, Anita Clifford was asked by Thomson Reuters to comment on the implications of the new sanctions package. The sanctions follow a tranche of recent designations of Political Exposed Persons from Belarus and Anita commented on the steps banks in the UK, including heads of compliance, should be taking now and the duty to report to OFSI if a bank is holding assets subject to sanctions.
